FEMME WAVE 2017 is a feminist arts festival that takes place on Treaty 7 territory and the traditional territory of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Nakoda (Stoney), and Tsuut'ina, also known as Calgary, Alberta. Founded in 2015, it is a collective-run organization with board and committee members of diverse and varying backgrounds. The festival takes place annually across multiple inner-city venues to create an integrated, encouraging arts scene with opportunities for women and non-binary artist. FEMME WAVE fosters supportive spaces and champions creativity, celebrates diversity, education, having fun and most importantly "BEING BADASS FEMINIST BITHCES!" (my personal favourite) Nothing personal against my male counterparts but let's face it, us ladies are pretty awesome!
To get YYC riled up with excitement and anticipation for FEMME WAVE 2017 starting November 16 - 19, 2017. It doesn't just offer amazing musical talents, but workshops, comedy, and visual arts celebrating powerful, beautiful and awesome women from across North America!!
This blog will outline my first 3 song choices and is dedicated to all my girls out there who needs a power boost of encouragement. This is also dedicated to all the ladies out there who are breaking barriers in today's world whether it is at work, sports, music or whatever you are doing in life to show that you can hold your own as a beautiful, strong, independent lady but also won't take any crap from anyone when you know you are are in the right! This is to all my girls who needs a reminder just how bad-ass you are, that you're not alone and the importance of loving yourself and always putting yourself first! Let's start the count down to FEMME WAVE 2017 with my first 3 choices of GIRL POWER songs!!
1) Run The World (Girls) - Beyonce
Who can ever forget the powerful Billlboard Awards Performance in 2011??!! This song I think is the anthem for women empowerment. This is a shout=out to all women who run their own world and the world literally; who are "smart enough to make these millions/ Strong enough to bear the children/Then get back to business." HALLELUJAH! This song samples the martial drum beat from dancehall duo Major Lazer's 2009 track, "Pon de Floor" and was taken to the next level during her performances when the whole on and off stage was dominated by women in military uniforms. Gives me goosebumps all the time!
2) I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
Such an iconic anthem as this one, this song as described by Gaynor is "just a simple song about survival, regardless of what you have to overcome...{she} loves the empowering effect...the encouraging effect. It's a timeless lyric that addresses a timeless concern". Although at the surface the song appears to be about moving on after a bad relationship but over time this song has become the anthem for people who have overcome any difficult situation. But did you know, this song was really about the lyricist, Dino Fekaris who recently got fired by Motown Record, who wrote this song to be encourage himself that he will survive, he will make it as a songwriter! HUH!
3. Try - Colbie Caillat
This is a phenomenon that I feel is getting worse every day especially in the social media and digital era that we live in today and the pressure that young girls feel to "fit" into the expectations of what "beautiful" means in the Hollywood sense and as a result integrating into the innocent minds of women expectations that are not true and self degrading. This song and video depicts the complete opposite and hopes to drive home the message to women that who you are is more than enough and staying true to yourselves, plain and simple. Women should not have to try so hard and to learn to accept yourself, your own unique beauty and then natural beauty will shine through when we truly love ourselves.
Till my next blog where I will be adding to this list, ladies I know it is a very tough battle to battle but we must BELIEVE that we are awesome, worthwhile and to not be afraid of expressing how proud we are of ourselves and that boasting is okay - a lesson that I am definitely learning everyday!
